Backstory – Hello Ninja (2005 – 2010)

Image

In 2005, I worked at Quarterdeck Seafoods in Maynard, MA. I tended bar, and my friend Pete Manzelli waited tables.  Both of us were pretty bad at our jobs. Pete played the drums, and I was bored, so we decided to start a band. I had to go back to school once summer was up, but Pete stayed in touch via email and updated me on his search for other members. Later on (I think it was the next summer? Maybe? Wait no that can’t be right.  Must’ve been like, JANUARY of 2005 we were talking, then SUMMER of 2005 things came together). Ok, so SUMMER of 2005, I came home from school and almost immediately found two guitarists (Will Deeks, Ian Sears) and a bassist (Derek Brown) to complete our line up. We had our first practice in like, June (must’ve been June – maybe July? What am I, a MILLION years old? I can’t remember a goddamn thing) at the Harvard Teen Center in Harvard, MA. Technically Fort Devens. I am grateful to Pete for getting the ball rolling.

After much debate, we called ourselves HELLO NINJA.  We were almost called Fuel Pump.

We played a few shows, including one at Sit ‘n Bull restaurant in Maynard, MA.

FAST FORWARD MONTAGE

(note: post some pictures here for a montage some day.)

THEN! We went to record some stuff, and we got a new drummer named ANTHONY! Anthony joined us from some other band (see them here and here) and then Ian left (now in THIS band), and we were a trio for a while, then we got Tim (now in THIS band) and we made some videos. The links below are all that remains of Hello Ninja’s legacy.

*Editors Note: I really wish I still had those jeans I was wearing in the picture. Will Deeks made me get rid of them. Grudge begins now.

I THINK OF ME TOO by Hello Ninja

Hello Ninja had the distinct honor of shooting our first video with the lovely and talented Mr. Kevin James.  We consider ourselves especially lucky to have worked with a director whose network included the stunning Barbara Renzullo (one of the only gray-scale actresses in the world) and uber-bright Alex Lewis, who lent his knowledge of weird TV magnets and stuff to the production.  Also his tremendous acting skills. Furthermore, the band owes thanks to a host of people, including producer Matt Newcomb, lighting man Craig Shannon, and EVERYBODY who gave up their Saturday to pretend to be at a class reunion.
